While there are literally thousands of search engines and directories out there on the net, there are only four search engines and two directories that count. They control over 95% of all search traffic worldwide.

Proper search positioning is more complicated than just going to a website and submitting to 300 search engines for free if you sign up for their newsletter. Do you have a sitemap and a robots.txt in the root of your website? If you do not know, you need to find out quickly! These files are critical to your success in online marketing. A sitemap is a search engine friendly .xml file to point the search engine spider to the pages you want indexed. A robots.txt does the exact opposite; it tells the spiders what pages not to index. Both are equally critical to your success in online marketing.

The Yahoo directory and the dmoz.org directory are two of the best kept secrets of search engine optimization. Very few websites can be truly successful unless they are listed in both of these directories. Dmoz.org is a free service where a specified human reviewer looks at your website and categorizes it. This process can take weeks, months or even years to complete. Yahoo directory is a paid directory service, that at the time of this writing was $299.99 annual listing fee. (non-adult) In our humble opinion, this fee is worth every penny. Put this in your online marketing budget.
